Magical Machair on the Isle of Tiree: One of Europe's Rarest Habitats

"Beeswings beating against the wind tide.

Machair Humming."

These are the words that tumbled from my mind and into my notebook whilst watching a little meadow of machair on the Isle of Tiree-Machair is the name for the wild flower meadows that grow on Scotland's west coast islands- the sand which consists of crumbled up shells blows ashore and creates a calcium-rich sand in which unique, grassland meadows thrive. These grasslands burst into a carpet of colour in the Summer months, and bees abound.

What could be more perfect, a meadow set against the Western ocean? And machair is only found on the Western coast of Scotland and Ireland, so it really is a British treasure.
