The Caledonian West Coast:A 'home from home'

Today, during my history reading for a lecture I stumbled upon the Latin word 'patria' meaning one's native land or homeland. This phrase struck a real chord within me and a strong sense of yearning to return to  the land where I feel most at one with myself and nature.Although I am Kentish born and bred,my true love is Scotland and to pinpoint this exactly...the Western isles and the Hebrides. Visiting Scotland for my family has become a form of addiction...frequent trips at least once a year if not twice  annually are essential, otherwise we all experience withdrawal symptoms.

It's beauty is unrivalled,at least in my eyes. The white beaches of Mora sands and Iona are unlike any I have seen before and the colour of the sea ignites into a glorious spectrum of blue when the sunlight should shine upon it.

The essence of these islands on the periphery of our realm is one of purity, isolation and wildness. In a series of chapters I will reflect upon these special islands and their unique character. It is of the utmost importance that they are treasured, preserved and enjoyed for many generations to come.
